A Berlin-based company has taken on the problem and developed sustainable clothing made of organic cellulose-based fibres to protect and care for the skin.

Fabric from seaweed

VitadylanTM is the name of the substance that cares for the skin when worn. It is based on seaweed from the Icelandic fjords, which is harvested biennially in a resource-conserving manner and only in fixed quantities. The following processing takes place exclusively in Germany: Dried and ground, the algae are enriched with zinc oxide fibres, among other things, and woven into fabric in a patented processing procedure that preserves the algae's vitamins and minerals. Instead of cotton, Modal, i.e. beech wood fibre, is another component. As a result, the production of a conventional shirt made of VitadylanTM uses around 70 litres of fresh water, while the production of a comparable cotton shirt requires up to 2,700 litres of water - this corresponds to a 97% reduction in water consumption.

Skin care included

The choice of natural raw materials allows not only sustainable and water-saving production but also caring effects for the skin. Of all natural products, seaweed contains one of the highest proportions of vitamins A, C and E, minerals and trace elements. Furthermore, zinc oxide has an antibacterial and odour-reducing effect and is essential for the immune system, sensory functions and metabolism.
