nova-Institut (2019): Sugar Sustainability Study

A new study by the nova-Institut investigates the sustainability of biobased raw materials for the chemical industry, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

According to the study, first-generation fermentable sugar is just as advantageous for a sustainable raw materials strategy of the European chemical industry as second-generation sugar.

In order to assess the sustainability of first and second generation fermentable sugar, twelve main criteria were selected. The selection of the criteria was based on the latest standards and certification systems for bio-based fuels and materials. A wide range of environmental, social and economic aspects were also considered. This criterion was given special attention because of the persistent accusation that the use of first-generation raw materials endangers food supply security.

The study was commissioned by Südzucker AG. It is available free of charge at www.bio-based.eu/ecology.
