Circular economy: digitalisation could close loops

Circular or closed-loop economy is the holy grail of any sustainable economy. The idea is that no materials are being wasted and lost during production, and instead everything can and will be reused and recycled. However, although Germany has one of the most advanced waste management systems in the world, only about 14% of the raw materials used in the German industry are derived from recycling processes.

Lindau: Spotlight on green chemistry

The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting is a prestigious melting pot for Nobel Laureates and talented young researchers. The renowned event has been held every year since its inception in 1951 and takes place during the last week of June at Lake Constance in the south of Germany. This year, 28 laureates have come together in Lindau. The overarching themes alternate between Chemistry, Physics, and Medicine & Physiology each year – this year the focus lies on Chemistry.

Scientists and anglers in the same boat

A plethora of factors is involved in the maintenance of functioning ecosystems. The smallest change in numbers between predators and prey can upset the balance of the entire system. However, even leading researchers in the field of natural resource management cannot predict how natural ecosystems will develop in response to management measures that dynamically interact with natural factors. Therefore the researchers conducted complex and extended field experiments in order to provide insight and answers for a future adaptive environmental management.

What plastic does to our waters

Carolin Völker was always enthusiastic about nature and the environment – even in her earliest school days. After growing up near Frankfurt am Main, Völker studied biology at Goethe University Frankfurt, where she subsequently specialised in ecotoxicology. Her PhD thesis dealt with the dangers that are posed by silver nanoparticles in the water cycle, and how to assess the corresponding risks.

Bioethanol increases market shares

According to the data handed out by the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Expert Control (BAFA) the consumption of bioethanol slightly increased by 0.2% throughout 2016. A total of 1.2 million tonnes of bioethanol were added to the petrol categories “Super”, “Super Plus”, and “Super E10”. As stated by the Federal Association of the German Bioethanol Industry (BDBe) this procedure reduced petrol-related CO2 emissions by 1.9 million tonnes.

“LivingLand” initiative closes with great support

European agricultural policies will have to change. That is the main message of the “LivingLand”-initiative that came to a close on May 2. Throughout the initiative, a public consultation on future common agricultural policies (CAP) in the EU, lay-citizens, farmers, and companies alike were asked to voice their opinions and suggestions in order to transform today’s agriculture into a more sustainable industry for tomorrow.
