BRAIN Biotech: Alliance for new nature-based ingredients
The Zwingenberg-based enzyme specialist BRAIN Biotech will be collaborating with the Dutch company Corbion in the future to develop new sustainable ingredients for food preservation.

Consumers are increasingly paying attention to natural ingredients in food and beverages. This trend is prompting manufacturers to use more nature-based recipes. The Zwingenberg-based biotechnology company BRAIN Biotech has now agreed to collaborate with Corbion, a Dutch company specialising in natural ingredients. The aim of the collaboration is to advance the development of novel bio-based antimicrobial compounds and their derivatives for use in the food industry.
Intensifying the use of sustainable, bio-based solutions
‘We are very pleased about the partnership with Corbion, with which we aim to intensify the possible applications of sustainable, bio-based solutions and put them on a broader footing,’ says Martin Langer, Managing Director and Executive Vice President of BRAIN Biotech AG. The company, which focuses on speciality enzymes, expects that ‘food manufacturers worldwide will benefit’ from this cooperation.
Advancing bio-based preservation technologies
BRAIN Biotech will contribute its expertise in the areas of special enzyme technology, microbial strain development and bioprocess development to the partnership. In addition, the Zwingenberg-based company will act as a technology licensor. ‘This collaboration will accelerate Corbion's efforts to offer food manufacturers preservation options that also appeal to consumers who are looking for foods based on natural ingredients,’ according to a joint statement by the companies.
Amsterdam-based Corbion specialises in the development of sustainable ingredients for various sectors, including the food industry. The Dutch company will support the partnership with its knowledge of food systems and bio-based preservation technologies, as well as its extensive customer and industry expertise and skills in piloting and scale-up. ‘We believe that this type of collaboration will help us bring the next groundbreaking innovations to market faster,’ said Domenico Vulcano, Vice President of Global Innovation at Corbion.
