As part of the Innoredux project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW) launched an online survey on packaging waste. The aim was to find out to what extent it is accepted to abstain packaging and what potential unpackaged products have.
More than a thousand volunteers took part in the non-representative survey. Almost all participants thought that for many products less packaging material would be sufficient. The majority also consider themselves insufficiently informed about product packaging.
The respondents (99%) agree that many products would require less packaging material. 80 percent declared that they would avoid buying products with heavy packaging. Many would like companies to provide more information about the type, quantity and recyclability of the packaging they use. 97 percent also approve of departments with unpackaged food in stores, although unpackaged stores are often avoided due to the long distance, a limited product selection and high prices.
