Finding new sustainable solutions

What if we could redesign everything? That is the tagline of dif – the disruptive innovation festival. dif is curated by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a non-profit organisation headquartered in the UK aiming to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy. Five years after its inception, DIF has become a one-of-a-kind online festival that took place from November 6 to 23 this year. Their programme contained more than 100 items, including studio discussions, live streaming events, podcasts and film productions.

Bio-based plasticizers for PVC

Plastics are an integral part of our everyday lives. Whether foil, cables or artificial leather - due to its diverse material properties, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) can be used in many different ways. Measured by its production volume, PVC is now the third most important plastic in the world after polyethylene and polypropylene. Nonetheless, the so-called soft PVC, which is frequently used for cable insulators, floor coverings or hoses, is increasingly subject to criticism.

Developing the bioeconomy model region

The decision to phase out coal has been taken. Coal regions such as Lusatia and the Rhineland must realign their economies. With the "Structural Strengthening Act for Coal Regions", the German government is therefore supporting areas that are particularly affected by the coal phase-out. It is not only alternative energy sources that are being promoted here. Support is also provided for the development of new, particularly climate-efficient industries aimed at sustainable production methods and the creation of future-oriented jobs.

UNEP (2021): Food System Impacts on Biodiversity Loss

The loss of habitats and biodiversity has never been as dramatic as in the last 50 years. The study "Food System Impacts on Biodiversity Loss" by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the think tank Chatham House concludes that the causes of nature destruction and species extinction are primarily the global meat industry and intensive agriculture.

Bioeconomy Exhibition

Our exhibition takes up these developments in a playful way and shows two imaginary worlds in which products and processes of the bioeconomy are fully integrated into everyday life. Be curious and discover what is hidden behind the plus and play buttons. This exhibition is best viewed in a desktop or tablet browser!

And be sure to have fun!

Microbe of the year goes to Magnetospirillum

Microorganisms are used in and for many biotechnological processes, including the production of chemicals and drugs. They offer a sustainable and often more efficient alternative to processes that were previously mostly fossil-based. In order to draw attention to the diversity of microbes and their enormous potential for many different applications, the members of the Association for General and Applied Microbiology (VAAM) elect the "Microbe of the Year" every year. For 2019, they have chosen the species of Magnetospirillum.

Delayed climate impact on groundwater

Deep below the ground is our most important water reserve: groundwater. The underground pool is the largest freshwater reservoir on earth and at the same time a precious source of drinking water. Almost two billion people around the globe draw their drinking water from it. Like the soil and the sea, this ecosystem is threatened by climate change, overexploitation and the growing world population.
