Thirty years ago, almost everything was going well
2017, the natural resources that can be generated within one year were already consumed by August 2nd. In 2008 the Earth Overshoot Day fell on 23 September, 1987 it was the 19th of December. The Global Footprint Network, an international organization committed to sustainability, calculates annually on which day of the year the annual resources are spent and from which day on humanity will survive on “credit” until 31 December.
Global resources are consumed more and more quickly.
Increasing exposure to CO2
EAbout 15,000 data points per country and year are included in the calculation. The entire demand for sustainable resources such as forests, farmland and fishing grounds is being matched to the earth's biological capacity to build resources and to absorb waste and emissions. Carbon dioxide emissions have been increasing the most over the last few years. Accordingly, the national Earth Overshoot Days are earlier in industrialized countries. Germany had already reached its ecological limit this year on 24 April.
