Amsilk GmbH is the world’s first industrial supplier of synthetic silk biopolymers and aims to make the new uber-material available for use in medical or technical products as well as cosmetics. The Martinsried-based start-up engineered bacteria to produce the spider silk polymer. Those microbes are now producing the coveted proteins in large quantities. Using this white protein powder the bioengineers even manage to produce synthetic fibres. Due to its antibacterial properties, the extremely durable material called “biosteel” is especially useful for high-performance materials. In fact, the sporting goods manufacturer Adidas is already using Amsilk’s high-tech fibres. In November 2016 Adidas and Amsilk presented the world’s first running shoe with a surface material consisting of 100% synthetic, vegan silk biopolymers that is also completely biodegradable.

Introducing the new product on an international stage

At the global cosmetic trade show in-cosmetics Global in London Amsilk and Ocean Pharma GmbH will present another world’s first: the first breathable nail polish made of functional silk biopolymers called “skinicer® OXYPERM”.

Water-repellent yet breathable

Conventional nail polishes seal off the nails from an external oxygen supply. The special formula of the new nail polish however creates a breathable and protective film allowing for water vapour and oxygen permeability. Especially the nail health will benefit from these properties: the oxygen permeability will prevent nail discoloration, while the water permeability will improve the overall wellbeing of the nail.

Silk biopolymers combined with microalgae

These remarkable properties are based on the broad therapeutic spectrum of Ocean Pharma’s patented active extract from microalgae, Spiralin®, which is naturally antibacterial, antiviral and cell regenerative. Moreover, “Skinicer Oxyperm” will not just be highly breathable, but also solvent-free and odourless. Due to its innovative ingredients the nail polish is furthermore hailed as extremely gentle and even suitable for especially sensitive and fragile nails.
