Bioeconomy in Japan

The processing and development of biomass is at the forefront of Japan’s high-tech nation. The automotive and electronics industry is one of the most important economic areas in highly-industrialised Japan.

A policy for using biomass was developed at an early stage. The bioeconomy is supported by numerous political initiatives and tax relief programs. The automotive industry, its suppliers and chemical companies in the field of bioplastics and fuels are developing important activities. The country is one of the world's largest per capita importers of food and feedstuffs, including many genetically modified plants.
