Bioeconomy in Colombia

Ten percent of the world's species are represented in Colombia. The country recognises the economic potential offered by biodiversity.

Colombia therefore promotes bioprospecting. The aim of the strategy, published in 2011, is to drive the commercial development of biotechnology while ensuring the sustainable use of resources. The biotechnology strategy has been published by the National Council for Economic and Social Policy. In order to further expand biotechnology, the capacities for bioprospecting must be increased according to strategy. The aim of biotechnology is to strengthen the competitiveness of the country and drive economic growth.
